Guitar is an ancient plucked instrument, and there are a lot of sayings about its origin. In English, it is called "guitar"; in Spain, it is called "guitarra"; in France, it is called "guitare"; in Germany, it is called"gitarre"; in Italy, it is called "chitarra". Though their spellings are different, the pronunciation is similar. The root "tar" comes from Sanskrit and in the areas of Persia and north India; it has the same meaning with "bow string". Then with the spreading of the word, it is called "kithara" in ancient Greek, "gitara" in Arabic, "guiterne" in ancient French. Finally, it becomes the modern English "guitar". The change is confusing, because according to the classification of instrument, "kithara" and "guitar" are not in the same category. Therefore, concerning the origin of the word, there is not any conclusion until now. The following is the evolution of guitar.

The Medieval AgeDuring the Medieval Age, harmony was still unknown to European musicians. It was bound to be transformed when it was spread to Europe since it originated in Asia. From then on, the instrument guitar initiated its long way of development in Europe.

The Period of RenaissanceThough the continuous probing and transforming of Spanish luthier and executant, guitar was gradually defined as one that was similar with the commonly seen classical guitar. Late in 19 CenturyBased on the experience of the previous people, Francisco Tarrega who was honored" the father of modern guitar "and Segovia perfected many performing skills and composed large amount of excellent works which made guitar which was once popular among the common people finally entered into the Sanctuary of classical music. This is the third period of golden age.

20 CenturySince guitar has become one of the most world widely fashionable instrument, its various styles, excellent expressive force, rich skills and attractive tone are appealing to people.
