How To Buy A Chromatic Tuner - Family

A chromatic tuner is a tool used by musicians to detect and display the pitch of notes played on musical instruments. A chromatic tuner will also detect and display flats and sharps. The following information will highlight a number of tips to buy a chromatic tuner that is correct for your circumstances.

Tuners, including the chromatic tuner, can range in their size and mode of detecting and displaying the notes. Some chromatic tuners will fit in your shirt pocket while others are table top versions or even 19" rack mounted units. The more complex and expensive units are used by instrument technicians, piano tuners and luthiers while the smaller are used by individual musicians or groups like rock bands. The simplest models of tuners often use bright LED lights or maybe a needle of some type to indicate if the pitch of the note played is lower, higher, or approximately equal to the correct pitch. The tuners that are more complex (and obviously more expensive) can detect and display with more precision the difference between offered note and the desired pitch.

Using a chromatic tuner is quite simple. Plug the guitar into the tuner using a typical guitar cord as if you were going to plug into an amp. Then simply turn the tuner on. With a foot pedal model the foot pedal is made to be on the floor and you can plug your typical 1/4" cable in and then out of it and tune anytime you need to. Lights will show you if you are sharp or flat so it does work in dimly lit stages as well.

You should also understand that you need to buy a tuner that will work for your basic circumstances. A guitar or bass tuner can only tune the notes of the strings on that exact instrument. A guitar tuner will only do the notes on a guitar:E-A-D-G-B-E. The bass tuner will only do Bass notes:E-A-D-G. Furthermore, a tuner for a cello, viola or violin can only tune the notes of the 4 strings on that instrument. A chromatic tuner can be used to tune any instrument and, as we already mentioned it will also detect and display flats and sharps in the range of notes.

So in general terms, electronic tuners can be classified into two categories: guitar-bass tuners and chromatic tuners. Don't confuse the two.

So there you have what you need. Now you can go online and buy the needed tuner for your specific needs.
