Guitar Nut Adjustment - Entertainment

Try the Guitar Nut Adjustment

A guitar nut is a small strip made of plastic, bone, graphite or any other type of fairly hard material and is located at the joint where the headstock joins the fret board. The major function of the nut is to guide the string to the fret board. Guitar nut adjustment is one of the basic set- ups that is necessary, in order to make it playable.

Often the brand new guitars that arrive from the factory have barely playable nuts. Again constant use of the instrument too can wear the nut away; therefore, it might need adjustment or replacement.

Wear and tear, humidity etc can prevent the guitar nut from performing its basic function of providing consistent lateral string placement. This in turn might lead to string slippage, string buzz thereby resulting in tuning problems of the guitar. The adjustment of the guitar nut can be of great help in this regard. Reduction in string friction and removal of the problem of tuning instability can be possible by fitting in of a roller nut. Even a novice can try the guitar nut adjustment. But it is always advisable to seek the help of an experienced luthier in this regard.

This is because an experienced tech would know the intricacies of setting up the nut " a skill that you might lack. First of all it is important to set the guitar properly before cutting the string slot depth into the guitar. Slot depth is an important factor that needs to be taken in to consideration as even minor adjustments can make big differences. Again it should be checked whether the slot width exceeds the diameter of its string or not. Then the slots need to be placed in the correct angle. Finally it is necessary to determine the nut height and shape.

Raising action on the nut is another important process that would not require the filling the slots to raise the depth. But before trying to adjust the guitar nut, ascertain the type of adjustment it requires for the adjustments differ from one guitar to another.
