Bass Guitar Lessons - Entertainment - Music

After years of claiming that I was going to learn how to play the bass guitar, I finally got off of my fat butt and bought a great looking bass guitar. Gorgeous, polished wood that shines in the light and screams "rock star". Unfortunately I forgot to buy the ability to actually play this beautiful instrument. Time to suck it up and learn how to play the bass.

Because I travel for work it seemed impossible to take lessons with a local music instructor. Having a regular schedule is not part of my lifestyle so I needed to find other options. Luckily for me, the internet has thousands of listings for bass guitar lessons. Unfortunately, the internet has thousands of bass guitar listings. I had no idea how to wade through pages of offers for "the best" or "the easiest" bass lessons. I caught a break; a friend recommended Roy Vogt's Teach Me Bass Guitar" and suggested that I try out the free sample lessons. Free sounded really good.

Teach Me Bass Guitar offers you the chance to try a few shortened lessons and let you get a feel for how the programs are structured and how the actual teaching will be done. Once I got over my fear of being too dumb to learn how to play the bass I was able to get comfortable with this process. I took the plunge and bought the whole program. I was ready to learn.

When you first receive the program it will appear intimidating; 20 separate lessons on 10 DVDs, a 160+ page book (a pdf), around 100 play-along videos and other add-ons. Ignore the panic. Starting at the beginning is always a good idea and that is the case here. Don't thumb through the book, don't look at the play-along videos. You don't know this stuff and it will discourage you. Start at the beginning and stick with the program.

Teach Me Bass Guitar does a nice job at the beginning of understanding that you need to learn the basics and it doesn't assume that you already know certain things. Simple things like how to hold a bass, how to tune a bass and what is on your guitar are covered.

One of the benefits of having the lessons on DVD is that you can pause or go back at your leisure. I had a few spots that left me confused but I could go back, try what was being shown and not move on until I was ready. I have never played any type of guitar before so I was a slow learner. This course is very good for beginners.

I went through all of the 20 lessons in about 4 months and then went over the last 10 again. I tried a few of the play-along videos after one month but then I put them aside until I was better at playing my bass. Again, don't get ahead of yourself, you will just get discouraged.

My take on the Teach Me Bass Guitar was overall quite positive. The videos are clear and don't try to cover too much at one time. The book was scary at first but as I became more comfortable with my bass I used the book more and more. The price for the entire course is $187.50 for all 20 lessons, the book and the play-along videos. 20 half hour lessons locally is $400 but there are no videos or books for review, making this program a very good deal. If you want to learn how to play the bass guitar you can't go wrong with Roy Vogt's Teach Me Bass Guitar.
