Guitar Lessons 101: How to Clean Your Guitar Properly

Guitars are very important in your guitar classes since it is impossible for you to learn the musical instrument without one to practice with. That is why it is required for you to have your own guitar to use in your guitar classes. If you are slowly becoming a dedicated guitarist, you also need to learn how to value your instrument. You have to realize that your guitar is your constant companion in your journey to becoming a musical genius.

Taking care of your musical instrument should be a constant concern whether you are playing your instrument or not. There are a lot of ways to maintain the quality of your instrumentincluding proper storage, proper handling, and cleaning. Cleaning your instrument regularly is important to maintain its quality and extend its length of service.

Cleaning Materials Needed

Soft cloth is your best friend in keeping your guitar clean and dust-free. A soft cloth like a chamois, which can both clean and polish your instrument, is a good choice for a cleaning material. You can also use a feather duster or any other cloth (such as old t-shirts or socks) as long as it does not damage the surface of your musical instrument.

You may also buy and use some polishing available in the market to keep the finish shiny. A glass cleaner can be used for your tuning keys, while you may also need additional cleaning aid like lubricant for your strings, and fret board conditioner. During guitar lessons, you can also ask advice from your teacher about the suitable cleaners and polishes depending on the type of your guitar.

Cleaning the Wood

Guitar parts, including the wooden surface, are sensitive to humidity and moisture. And it happens sometimes that the surface accumulates dirt when you use your instrument in guitar classes. Dirty hands and dirty table or floor surfaces (where you carelessly put down your guitar) can attract filth on the wooden part of your guitar.

Cleaning the wood must be done using only a dry cloth. If it is very dusty, wipe thoroughly with a dry cloth to keep the dust from sticking to the wood. You can also use a polish made especially for guitar to add sheen to the wood. Apply polish on the wood using a cloth with circular motion. You can also use thin and delicate brushes on the areas that are hard to reach.

Keeping the Fret Board and Metallic Parts Clean

The fret board, bridge, and tuning pegs are usually called the hardware parts of a guitar. Just as with the wooden part, a soft dry cloth is okay to use in cleaning these areas. But you may need a tooth brush to clean areas where a significant amount of grime has accumulated. You can also use non-abrasive polishes made for guitar to clean these parts.

Is it Time for New Strings

Your strings also need to be changed after some time, especially when you are regularly using your musical instrument in your guitar classes. During periodic cleaning, you can change the strings of your guitar to keep your sound on top notch condition.
