What If The Bridge On Your Acoustic Guitar Comes Off? - Entertainment - Music

Even on the best made and most expensive acoustic guitars, the bridge will occasionally come loose. Sometimes just a portion of the bridge comes loose and is still attached to the top. Sometimes it will come completely off. When this happens it can be quite disconcerting, especially if it is an expensive guitar. If your guitar has had the bridge come loose, don't panic! It can be fixed as good as new again.

The first thing to do if you notice the bridge on your guitar starting to come loose is to loosen the strings. Loosening the strings will remove the tension on the bridge and prevent it from totally coming off. If the bridge has come completely off, remove the strings and save the bridge and the bridge pins.

The next task is getting the bridge re-attached, if it is in good condition, or having a new one put back on, if it was damaged. This is a task that should be done by an experienced guitar repairman or a luthier. Check your local area for one who advertises that they do this type of repair.

The repair will involve removing the loose bridge, if it did not totally come off, cleaning the glue off of the guitar top and the bottom of the bridge, and then re-gluing it to the top in the proper location for the correct string length and intonation. A good Luthier or repairman will know how to do this. The type of glue used is also important. A good repair will use hide glue or yellow glue to reattach the bridge to the top. This ensures ease of removal in the future. Stay away from someone who proposes an epoxy, which cannot be removed with heat. Qualified repairmen will also be able to build you a new bridge if it was damaged and repair any cracks that may have occurred as a result of the bridge coming loose.

A loose bridge or one that has come off is not a difficult repair, but it is not something that should not be done by the average person. Find a good instrument repairman or guitar maker to be sure that the job is done right.
