Tips for Adjusting Acoustic Guitar Action

You are playing your acoustic guitar and are passionate about it, but you are not getting the right sound. You are irritated. You fret and fume. Don't worry! It is time for adjusting the acoustic guitar action. Outlined here are some tips in this regard. There may be various reasons that directly affect the action.1. If there is excess moisture, the woods of the instrument will swell; and if there is less moisture, they will shrink.2. Because of the movement of strings over them, the grooves of the nut and the bridge saddle do wear off.3. Due to the tension placed on the top, the action on flat top instruments do raise over time.4. If the gauge of the strings is changed, there will be a change in tension on the top and neck of the instrument. This will hence have an effect on your set up and so the action can also be adjusted accordingly.

Don't worry. There is one simple adjustment that you can do on your own.

Remember the saddle height is one of the most important factors in the overall string action. And you must already be aware that the action is nothing but the string height above the fret board. So if the string action is too high, you have to lower the bridge saddles; and if the string action is too low, you have to raise the bridge saddles.The saddles can be raised or lowered; by rotating the nuts either by your fingertips or by using the Allen key, depending on which instrument you have. By lowering the action, the strings are put closer to the fret board; and vice versa.

You should adjust the nuts in such a way that the string spacing is correct. Also, the strings should not bind in the slots and there should be proper gap between the string and the fret.

You may have thought that by tightening the truss rod, you could have adjusted the action. But in most cases, it is not the truss rod which needs adjustment, but instead it is the nut. And we have taught you how to do it.
