What Should I Look for in an Electric Guitar? - Shopping - Electronics

Electric guitars use the principle of electromagnetic induction to convert vibrations from its metal strings into electric audio signals. These signals are then amplified before sending them to a loudspeaker. Modifications like reverb and distortion are often used to add "color" to the output. Invented in 1931 it was used mostly by Jazz musicians but later rock and roll artistes adopted the electric guitar as an essential component for that genre of music.

When buying your first electric guitar you should remember that the wood should be good and the electric guitar should show at least a reasonable level or workmanship. Vintage models offer very good sound. The most famous and well known models are the Les Paul (Gibson), the Stratocaster (Fender) and the Telecaster (Fender). The wood and pick up of these models give off superior sound. Instead of going for a cheaper version, save some more cash and go for a better decent sounding model that will be easier to handle and cost around $400.

If you can't afford a Fender Stratocaster you can look for a cheaper alternative in the Squier Fat Stratocaster. They are good for beginners as they are similar in appearance to the Fender model and produce a reasonably good sound. The Epiphone G-310 SG uses cheaper hardware and lower quality pickups and is modeled on the more expensive Gibson SG models. It offers value for money and is satisfactory for beginners. The Yamaha PAC012DLX Pacifica HSS Deluxe is another model that offers great value for money. Wood quality is good and workmanship very pleasing. The Squier Affinity Series Telecaster is a favorite among professionals like Keith Richards, Steve Cropper and Albert Lee among others. The most famous instrument among the rock and roll guitarists is probably the Les Paul. Epiphone has replicated the Les Paul in it economy version: the Epiphone Les Paul Special II. The model features a laminated alder/maple body, mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard and has two open-coil humbucking pickups.

When buying an amplifier you might end up spending more for the amplifier than the electric guitar. If you buy a Fender Pro Junior you might have to spend something around $400. Do not be alarmed at the high price, as the amplifier will be useful for years and can be sold at close to its cost price if you ever plan to sell it. Before buying any equipment, visit two or three stores or take a few quotes so that you can get the best price for your instrument and amplifier.
